missing passwd file

Hi Guys,

I wonder how I can login into a linux system without having the passwd file. I was testing a script that unfortunately renamed my passwd file so now everytime I try to login on that system because it can't identify what shell to use basically it doesn't let me login. Any ideas. thanks.

Actually the error I got in the first place was due to a script that modifies the passwd and shadow files and then it takes copies and also rename the current files and the new ones but something happen in between so i've ended without a /etc/passwd file. Therefore basically what I did is boot up the machine using the emergency CD and then rename the latest copies of my shadow and passwd file and fortunately back to bussines.
