Ubuntu Hangs when shutting down

i really dont know any other way to put it besides that Ubuntu 8.04, that i just installed on my computer hangs when it shuts down. the bar depletes the orange like it should, but it never actually shuts down.
anyone know whats going on?

Use ctrl+alt+1 to see the text version of the shutdown sequence so that you can see where it hangs.

i went to text version and it worked
but now i get a keyboard failure

scratch that last comment
the external hard drive that does get recognized by my desktop caused the keyboard error.
now i no this has nothing to do with this thread, im just too lazy to make a new one, so if anyone can help,i need to mount my ext. hard drive to my pc.
has ubuntu 7.10
ubuntu 8.04
and windows xp
