Backup Fedora 5

I have a Linux email server(using IMAP4 as email protocol) ,the OS is using Fedora 5, I need to do a backup every month. (I dont have tape drive)

I tar all the volume, ie. /var /home /usr....
with command tar -zcvf home.tar /home.

Then copy all the tar to another media for storage.

Am I correct on my method?

If there is a crash in the future, I will replace the bad harddisk, reinstall Fedora 5, then untar the tar file to every volume.

The approach is correct, tar whatever you need, and copy the tar wherever you want. If you need incremental backup, check rsync
