Question Kali cannot find WiFi card.

After installing the latest version of Kali on my Lenovo S21E laptop, I cannot access the internet.

wlan0 does not show up in ifconfig and I cannot connect to the internet.

If you need any other additional information, I will provide it. Thank you kindly.

What did you have before? Did it work?

What hardware do you have? lspci, lsusb, etc.

Windows 8, and it did work. I don't know about the hardware but it's the default S21E hardware

Let me ask a (stupid) question:

Some laptops have a physical switch to turn the power on/off to the wifi adapter. When you installed Kali was it switched on? If not, the install routine wouldn't have seen it (and selected/loaded the driver). Or perhaps the driver isn't on the distribution media?

Can you use wifi if you boot from 'live' media?

This one does not have a switch. I can only try a live version of Kali as it refuses to accept windows 7 and I am still downloading other OSs

A quick search of the web tells me that this is a known problem on this laptop. A number of forums out there seem to point people to this web page where some kind soul has documented his build:

kilala.nl - A cheap laptop as pen-testing portable: Lenovo Ideapad s21e-20 and Kali

I suggest you give that a shot.

Thank you kindly, I will try that!

For another question: when I try to install Windows 7, I get "the bios in this system is not fully acpi compliant" - how do I fix that? The bios has an option for "OS optimized defaults" and Win7 is on there, so there must be a way to install it
