What's better for running Windows software in Linux, Wine or Windows VMware?

What are the differences, advantages, and disadvantages?

VMware creates guest operating systems - you switch back and forth between OSes.
VMware is/was expensive.

Wine has limitations - so for example you want to run a game like WOW in wine, you might have major issues.

What software do you need to run? Linux has almost anything there is except brand-name gaming and office productivity software like MS Office.
