Windows to Unix Admin

Hi,

I'm looking a bit of advice on a job offer I've been made.

I'm currently a Microsoft Windows Administrator, with good experience in this and also in Novell.

I've just been offered a job to re-train as a UNIX Administrator.

I'm not sure whether to take it or not. It's more salary, and I was thinking if I had Windows, Novell and UNIX skills I would be very employable.

I'm just concerned that I make the correct choice, i.e. is UNIX more specialised, and would this be a big career change i.e. how different would the career path of a Windows Systems Admin be to that of a UNIX Systems Admin?

Anyone any advice?

Thanks for reading.

More knowledge and more skills are never a bad thing. I used to work in a Microsoft/Novell environment and switched over to a pure Macintosh OD environment and once I finish building my skills I will be able to sys admin OS X, Windows, and *nix systems.

Plus, in my opinion, Unix style OSes are way more fun to sys admin. You get to write all those nifty cool shell scripts and build some basic programming skills.

Do it. There are more Windows jobs, but MANY more Windows admins. Once you've proven yourself as a Unix admin you'll be extremely employable. After 10 years, I quit Unix for a technical trainer job half a year ago, but still get unsolicited contacts from recruiters with open Unix jobs or contracts several times a month.
