Error with ld

I am trying to compile some fortran and c++ code on an hpux11.22-ia64 machine. I am getting the following error:
Code:
ld: The value 0xXXXXXXX does not fit when applying the relocation GPREL22 for symbol "somevar" at offset 0xYY in section index 303 of file /path/to/lib.a[some.o]
I looked at the HP-UX release notes, but the note about GPREL22 error was not helpful. Maybe I just don't understand it.

Can anybody help?
