Change root password?

Hello!

I forget the root password and I need to change it. I've read others threads about it in this forum, but it seems it's necessary to modify /etc/passwd file. In my HPUX Systems this passwd file have only "read" permissions ant its owner is the root user, so how can i modify this file, if I have not permission on it and if I cannot loggin as root?

Thx in advance!

You can only change the root password if you are logged in as root. The /etc/passwd file is meant to be written to only by programs such as passwd (used to change passwd), so just read permissions don't really matter.

What matters is that you have forgotten your root password and need to change it. Afaik, the only way to access root without a password inHP-UX is at console when you boot into single user mode. You might have to get a downtime and do this to regain root access.
