reset console

I have HP-UX 11i. My serial console is not responding to any input. How can I reset the console without rebooting the system? I can telnet in with no problem and system runs fine other than the console. Thanks.

Do a "ps -ft console" to see what is running on the console. There could be a hung process from an old session. Once the old session dies, init should respawn a getty...provided the console entry in /etc/inittab is still there. Also maybe the terminal itself needs a hard reset. Also you can try typing a control-Q on the terminal.

Thanks, it turned out to be a session that didn't want to die. I must have missed it before. I killed it and the console is now responding.

On a different note, would you happen to know where can I find articles on Unix Best Practices?
