Flat cables vs normal circular cables

Do flat cables have any advantage over normal circular cables? I was looking at this.

A flat cable would probably have thinner wires, tending to be more fragile and poorer performing.

If you consider a circular coaxial cable it won't cause additional magnetic field to any point externally to the cable.

monitoring a circular file

I have an event log which is a circular file. I would like to be able to see real-time updates of that event log. Kind of the equivalent of a 'tail -f'.
