ssh issue
Hello,
I have two computers at my desk, let's call them A and B. I have some tasks that can only be performed on one of them and some on the other, so I need to be able to ssh from one to the other and vice versa to transfer files, etc.
A can ssh to B without problem: I even copied the public key across so that the login is passwordless. File transfer works fine and everything is ok. However, B cannot ssh to A smoothly. My command is usually this:

ssh user@ip.address

whereupon I'm prompted for a password; I give the correct one, but it says "permission denied", and after three tries it returns to command prompt.
If I try this:

ssh root@ip.address

and I give the root password, then I do connect to A, after which I can

su user

to use the specific user.
The question is, how can I enable ssh with the user? I tried mucking about with /etc/ssh/sshd_config on both machines, tried adding the user to AllowUsers, I shared the public keys in the authorized_keys file in .ssh, but nothing has worked.
I'm happy to provide any details you may require in helping me.

what does it say when you do the below on A.

It gives the same response as with B. I'm asked for a password, I give the right one, and tells me permission is denied. If I try

and I give the root password, then I can login into A no problem.

You need to run ssh with more verbosity to understand why authentication is failing.

ssh -vvv username@host

On the server end, look in the logs. /var/log/auth.log will give you a pretty good idea about what happens when you try to login, look for messages that contain "sshd".

There is no /var/log/auth.log file.
In verbose mode, it says many things, anything in particular I should pay attention to?

Leo B - What OS are you running?

Things to look for as a start:
restart the sshd service on both boxes (as root)
Try:

and post the result.

A is running Redhat 5, B is running Fedora 11.

I substituted the ip address and the hostname. If I try with user@hostname, it goes to the password prompt but always tells me that permission is denied.
