Ron Ross on Decision Latency
vincent
Wed, 07 Nov 2007 23:22:28 +0000 On the BRCommunity website [*1], the well-known business rules author and lecturer Ron Ross has written an article on The Latency Of Decisions, commenting that bringing decisions closer to the data makes sense. Ron writes about an earlier BRCommunity article, and says: [Previous article states that] the problem is that “managers continue to struggle with the issue of how lower data latency can be of value to the business.” Why? I believe they’re asking the wrong question. It isn’t the latency of the data that matters, it’s the latency of what you can do with the data that matters. From an event processing perspective, we believe both data latency and decision latency are important. Making quick decisions on stale data doesn’t help much - you want the “state of the world” to be as close to real-time as you can, and you want to deal with events to derive information and knowledge at their “point of detection”. This pretty sums up the role of Complex Event Processing and also how it helps solve problems like XTP too. Notes: [*1] The Business Rule Community website is not a blog and doesn’t have an RSS feed, unfortunately. I note the subtitle for the site has recently been amended a “resource for business rule and enterprise decisioning professionals“. Ah, decisioning again. Its a little strange the site owners continue to require users log-on to access content - a little bit like preaching-to-the-choir as most site visitors will surely already be familiar with the concepts of business rules and rule engines?
