How to put VIOS in Maintenance mode?

Hi this may be a easy question to answer but thanks in advance.

So I was able to download the VIOS media from IBM and currently I am burning it to a cd/dvd right now.

The steps I've collected so far are from the net. can you please confirm and add on to the steps if there are any steps missing. Ultimate goal is to bring VIOS up in maintenance mode because i am not able to open a terminal from HMC or login to our VIOS via ssh. I received the following errors;

· We are not able to telnet to VIOS (ip/hostname)
o When telnet'ing we receive message that there is not enough space in the /var/adm/wtmp file system.
· We are not able to open a terminal to VIOS from HMC.
Error--> NIS: server not responding for domain

1. Start off by shutting down all LPARS on the P740 (already done)

2. Put the media CD in the P740

3. Put the VIOS in SMS mode
configurations --> Manage profiles --> Edit --> click SMS --> hit OK
while p740vios is checked. --> operations --> restart.
This step (#3) I am puzzled about. please help...

This is a Single VIOS 2.2.0.0 on a p740 which is running AIX 6.1 LPARs
