Hi Michael,

Thanks for the amber lights - warning b/c power cable got disconnected.

The Serial Porting Setup is 19200, 8, 1, None but did not get SMS menu for neither front or back serial port. If I hit enter, only see these @@@@@

Thanks for your help so far.

The SMS menu is only active on serial port when system is in powerdown (i.e., only the service processor is running).

In other words, once you power on you wont see the ASMI menu (for long) on the serial port.

When it does work, when you connect you see nothing, press enter and you should see something like:
Code:
michael@x121:[/home/michael]cu -l tty0
Connected

Sorry, I am very newbie with AIX.

There is no graphic card so I can't connect the monitor to it. I need to find the way to log on to the server to enable ssh, rsh or telnet.

I follow this instruction from IBM web site to setup the machine.
http://pic.dhe.ibm.com/infocenter/powersys/v3r1m5/topic/iphaf_p5/sa41516604.pdf

would you please hint me some directions?

Thanks so much again!

How did you install AIX (or VIOS)? If you can answer that question for me I should be able to come up with some suggestions.

---------- Post updated at 06:51 PM ---------- Previous update was at 06:40 PM ----------

p.s. If you have not installed anything yet, maybe you need to do a factory reset. This is a demo video I did back in 2006/2007 (I did not do vocals then, was hard enough to make a video (for me)).

This may help you along - along the lines of the install document you referenced.

Hope this helps!

We purchased this AIX server with AIX 7.1 version installed from one vendor that we used to order HP servers. He prefered me to this forum for help!
I don't have the CD to reinstall.
What should be the correct Power On/Off System settings if the OS AIX 7.1 was installed ? Should it be "Fast, Temporary, Normal, Continue to Operating System, Running, Power off, C (for i5/OS partition mode boot)?

Maybe sound stupid question but I'd like to understand that if I reset to factory default and reinstall the OS (if I have the CD). I will see the process on ASCII terminal, correct? After done installing OS, I can setup IP address for the server and install SSH?

Thanks.

I am unable to access your demo video. I saw the video on Youtube. Thanks.

Sorry, the page you have requested cannot be found.

You can search this site if you are looking for something specific about Linux or UNIX.

it prepended https://www.unix.com/ to the URL. Thanks for pointing this out.

And great that you found in on Youtube, that is where it is stored.

So, also available via: p5 factory reset - YouTube

But also important - did it help?

You do not have to reinstall AIX, the factory reset affects the supervisor/hypervisor, not the information stored on disk.

p.s. Your vendor should have provided the DVD, or maybe he gave you a system to play with, but not a licensed install of AIX.

does the information panel say HMC=0 when the system is running?

If not, the serial console should be active, but at an unknown baud rate (should be 19200, but could be anything it sounds like).

If it says HMC=0, the system expects an HMC and the serial port is disabled when AIX is powered on - as a security measure.

It is also possible that the serial port is defective. Speak with the supplier re: warranty/support.

Hi Michael,

you mean after resetting to default, I suppose to see something on the terminal screen? after reset to factory default, it's the same.
the front panel shows 01 N V=F and below V is T.

Power On/Off System
Current system power state: On
Current firmware boot side: Temporary
Current system server firmware state: Running

System boot speed:Fast
Firmware boot side for the next boot:Temporary
System operating mode:Normal
AIX/Linux partition mode boot:Continue to OS
Boot to system server firmware:Running
System power off policy:Automatic
i5/OS partition mode boot:A

I have the 2 activation code. I can activate VET but don't know where to activate POD code
I did contact the vendor but they no help.

What should I do next? Smilie
Thanks.
