AIX 4.3.3 takes forever to log in

Hi all, my RS/6k 7043 150 with aix 4.3.3 takes FOREVER to log in. When I power the machine on, the boot process procedes normally and I get 2 short beeps (which I don't recall hearing before) and then I get the login window. If I log in, as root, say, the machine goes to its usual blue screen which says something like "Starting the Common Desktop Environment" and it sits on this screen for what seems like forever. Eventually, I do get logged in (after something like half an hour). If I do a command line login or a failsafe login, I get logged in very quickly. Can anyone give me any advice as to how to troubleshoot this problem?

Thanks for the help. Jeff

Hi,

do you have DNS wrongly configured? Sometimes login to AIX last long if your DNS is wrongly configured and AIX have to wait timeouts from DNS lookups.

Hi,
You must have a conflict of IP addresses or name of host on the /etc/hosts file (2 addresses for the same name of host for example).you must login in failsafe mode and edit this file by: vi /etc/hosts.

Hi,

try to log in into failsafe and add default gateway
#route add 0 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
,which xxx is a ethernet IP in your machine
and logout, login using CDE, also try "smit mktcpip"
or try configured two ethernet with different class
example
ethernet 1 192.168.8.4
ethernet 2 192.168.10.4
