Hello experts,


I have installed solaris 10 on x86. When I try to boot I get an error
with ablue screen
login failed please try again. I am new to this o.s. It used to work
nicely before what did I do wrong?

That would indicate that either the username and/or password you're using to access the system is incorrect. By "Blue Screen" I assume that you're talking about the standard graphical console login that comes with Xsun.

If you can't login as yourself, try logging in as root. If you still can't log in, you've forgotten the root password. Boot from CD-ROM, mount the root slice, and remove the password for root from the /<mountpoint>/etc/shadow file. Obviously this will involve some downtime.

The problem I am facing is that I cannot get to the command prompt.
The system freezes at the error screen.

Before getting to the screen I see a message
dtlogin 565 popen_aprm_conf: /etc/pam.conf writable by group.

I don't know if this helps.

Can you login by any other id, if not do you have a resue disk

dont boot your system in the usual mode

boot your system in single user mode
and check for the file permissions

( i mostly suspect at that point)

check if the file /etc/pam.conf has the following permissions set (644)
/etc/pam.conf -rw-r--r--

and now reboot your system as usual,

i believe this should solve your problem
