Here is a procedure I used on my XP laptop. I do not know if it will work on Windows 2000. But here it is anyway:
In explorer, highlight "My Computer", left click, and select "properties" to bring up the System Properties window. Click the "Advanced" tab. In the "Performance" area, click "Settings" to bring up the "Performance Options" window. Click the "Advanced" Tab here. In the "Memory usage" area, click the "System cache" radio button. Finally click apply.
This will expand your cache and it's the relevant setting I know. This setting enabled me to use most of my 1 GB.
