Stop/Start proftpd

Hi everyone, I was wondering how to configure ftp access for one user when I found this board.

After some searches I found my infos around proftpd (and the great config file proftpd.conf who answered to all my dreams...)

but now I only need to stop proftpd and restart it (I guess it is needed to take the modifications done in proftpd.conf, isn't it?)

I 've made some FTP test and my user still arrives in an old directory, previously configured in proftd.conf and I wish him to go in the new directory configured

so how do I stop/restart proftdp?

is it necessary? if not, why do my changes have no effect?

Thanx!
