Did you change the partition setup since since you last updated grubs configuration? If grub hangs at boot up with a blank screen reading "grub_" it most often means that you changed the partition setup or deleted the grub.conf file because the grub setup on your MBR cant find it's configuration file on the partition you pointed grub to.
