I'm a newbie to UNIX
I just received an ultra 5 box that does not come with media. Before I received this box, I was told that it does not come with media. (I'm assuming that because it does not come with media, that is why when I turn on the system, nothing comes on the monitor. QUESTION 1: I'm I correct with this assumption? If not what should I do? The monitor is not a sun monitor. Its a monitor that I use for my NT box. The monitor works well with my NT box) QUESTION2: I have the solaris 8 CD's Pack that I got from the sum websit Now, I would like install solaris 8 on this box. What's the process involved? Thanks, Ted |

Hi Ted,
Do you have a Sun keyboard? If not, I think you will have problems from the start. The monitor you have should be fine. Put the 1st CD in the cdrom, hit the "Stop+A" on your keyboard (this is the stop key on the left and the 'a' key at the same time). You should get an "ok" prompt. Now type 'boot cdrom' and hit enter. This should get you started and the gui install isn't too complex so I think you should be able to figure it out. If not, post your questions. CUL8R, TioTony |

TioTony,
Yes, I'm using a sun keyboard. I also realised that the monitor works good. So I went ahead and tried what you asked me to do but I got some erorr messages on the screen when I Inserted the disk 1 and hit the STOP + A key at the same time: Below is the error message: Boot device: disk file and args: Bad Magic number in disk label Can't open disk label package Evaluating: boot Can't open boot device ok Let me know what you think and what steps I should follow? Thanks, Ted |

Sorry, my fault. I forgot the actual disk Sun refers to as the "Installation Disk" is pretty much useless for all practical purposes. Software CD 1 is what you need.

Thanks for the help.
I own the disk pack for SOLARIS 8 Media INTEL PLATFORM EDITION. And my system is an Ultra 5 containing a 270 Mhz Ultra 5 II processor, 64MB of memory and a 4.3 GB hard drive Do you think that's why I'm having problems? Any way Below is what I did: I tried to instal DISK 1 of 2 but I had errors: I inserted DISK 1 and hit enter. At the ok prompt, I typed boot cdrom and received this error message: ok boot cdrom Boot device:/pci@1f, 0/pci@1,1/ide@3/cdrom@2,O:f File and args: Bad Magic number in disk label Can't open disk label package Can't open boot device Do you have any other thoughts about resolving this issue? Thanks, Ted |

If you're using Intel media on a Sparc machine, that'll be your problem...
You need to get the Sparc media - the x86 media only works on x86 machines. |
