WAN == Wide Area Network

LAN == Local Area Network

when you are setting up your routing tables this makes a difference when setting up your gateways. however in concept there is not much difference except that one is usually smaller, and may or may not be connected to a WAN. if you have a home network with 5 computers connected together through a router, then you have a LAN. an example of a WAN is the internet.
