In addition to what Corona688 has already said, you also need to note that the echo command just copies strings to its output; it doesn't read a response from its input. To get input from the user, you'll probably want to use the read utility. Note that there is probably a section 1 man page for the read utility and a section 2 man page for the read() function (or system call) on your system. Try:

man 1 read

to get the read utility's man page.

You'll also need to check the syntax of the if command and the test (or [ ) command for the shell you're using. You should be able to find details on the shell's man page. Presumably for a class like this, your shell would be sh, ksh, or bash. By now, you can guess how to find your shell's man page.

       mkcover - HylaFAX continuation cover page generation command

SYNOPSIS

       /var/spool/fax/bin/mkcover qfile template result

DESCRIPTION

       bin/mkcover  is the command invoked by the facsimile server when a continuation cover page is required for an outbound job that is about to
       be retried.  It generates a single POSTSCRIPT(R) page that is imaged according to the remote capabilities  and  transmitted  as	the  cover
       page.  The arguments are:

       qfile	 the job description file for the outbound job.

       template  the cover page template file, as used by the faxcover(1) program.

       result	 the filename where the resultant POSTSCRIPT document should be written.

       The default mkcover command is a shell script that uses awk(1) to parse the job description file and generate the cover page document.  The
       template file may be optionally compressed with compress(1), pack(1), or gzip(1); the filename suffix is used to decide whether or not  the
       template file contains compressed data.
