You can get the IP address of a domain, yes.

Code:
# nslookup bbc.co.uk
Server: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Address: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: bbc.co.uk
Address: 212.58.241.131

ping will also give the IP address, and in many impementations the domain name.
