I was able to get the sendmail kind of working.
Using the instructions on this site:
http://yoavgivati.com/2009/10/let-po...-snow-leopard/
I can send mail from OS X.
Now instead of arriving into the inbox, the email goes into the junk mailbox. Could be because gmail is catching it as spam for some reason.
What do you suggest to get around this issue?

Is there anyway to change the from address in the email sent using mailx command?
I have the following command:
mailx -s $subject xxx@xxxx.com < $mail_mesg

Is there any way i can verify the email address (before sending the mail) using the mailx command ?
I know that
sendmail -bv email@address.com
can do it but there is a compatibility issues with the version of Unix we have. So mailx is the only command we can used at this point.

I logged into server "XXX" and executed nslookup XXX. output number is 123.23.23.45

from - Shows whom mail messages are from
SYNOPSIS
from [-s sender] [user]
The from command prints out the mail header lines in your mailbox file.
OPTIONS
Prints headers for mail sent by sender. Specifies a mail spool directory.
Use this flag if you want to examine a mailbox in a directory other than /usr/spool/mail, which is the system default.
DESCRIPTION
If user is specified, then user's mailbox is examined instead of your own.
EXAMPLES
To display the message headings in your mailbox, enter: from
