You don't always want to exit on error and even when you do you often want to output a meaningful error message so you should pass that in as well prior to testing the exit code.
I am not sure if your code is testing the return code of the command or the success of the redirection to the log, couldn't say without fooling around with it.
Probably better to tee the output rather than redirect it so you can see what is going on

I face some problem with handling of nulls. I declare a variable - say i - and intialise to 0. Later I read it from console, wherein if I dont give any variable and press return key, I get this error:
"0403-004 Specify a parameter with this command"

tee [OPTION]... [FILE]...
DESCRIPTION
Copy standard input to each FILE, and also to standard output.
-a, --append
append to the given FILEs, do not overwrite
-i, --ignore-interrupts
ignore interrupt signals
-p diagnose errors writing to non pipes
--output-error[=MODE]
set behavior on write error. See MODE below
--help display this help and exit
--version
output version information and exit
MODE determines behavior with write errors on the outputs:
'warn' diagnose errors writing to any output
'warn-nopipe'
diagnose errors writing to any output not a pipe
'exit' exit on error writing to any output
'exit-nopipe'
exit on error writing to any output not a pipe
The default MODE for the -p option is 'warn-nopipe'. The default operation when --output-error is not specified, is to exit immediately on
error writing to a pipe, and diagnose errors writing to non pipe outputs.
