These machines have a Mylex DAC960 raid adapter in a pci slot. They also have two onboard Adaptec controllers (alad). If you are not using the Adaptec controllers then disable them in the CMOS. If you are using them (for tape or cd) then you can add the scsi.noscan option to the boot string.

I changed disk controller. Unplugged every disk, inserted another controller card, an IBM M1015. The disks are recognized in BIOS, and the controller card's BIOS shows up. But after that, I drop into GRUB and a prompt. That is all.
