Worked like a charm!
Both of you were correct. I inadvertantly left the asdfxx.p file in the "desired output". I indeed, did not want it to find that match.
I made the changes, as Mumford suggested, and it worked exactly as I wanted it to originally. Thank you both for your expertise!

Hi there,
is it possible to use wild cards in this statement
ssh $remote_server 'perl -pi -e "s,EXP_SERIAL_19b8be67=\"\",EXP_SERIAL_`hostid`=\"UNKNOWN\"," /var/myfile'

If I want to say open files that all look like this and assign them to a filehandle and then assign the filehandle to a variable, how do I do this?

blockdiag [options] file DESCRIPTION
This manual page documents briefly the blockdiag commands. blockdiag is a program that generate block-diagram image file from spec-text file. OPTIONS
These programs follow the usual GNU command line syntax, with long options starting with two dashes (`-'). A summary of options is included below.
