Sorry for my broken english. This is what actually happening. I connecting HP-UX using SSH on my WIndows PC. I login with user id oracle before I using su root to get to root. I create a shadow file in etc. Then I accidentally type a command passwd and enter. It prompt for enter new password for root. I enter with a blank password. It prompt for reenter new password.I enter with a blank password. It prompt me file has unchanged. I exit root and try su root to get to root. After i key in my password and enter, it prompt su: unknown id: root. This is what happening. I exit SSH and open it back. Connect to HP-UX by oracle user id and try to get to root by su root. It stil prompt me su: unknown id: root. Just like I enter a wrong password which is I don't. Since I cannot get to root by SSH. I try to connect to HP-UX by console. Neither oracle or root can get to HP-UX. It prompt me login incorrect. What I'm suppose to do to fix this problem. Thanks

I have an old (I mean "dinosaur old") server that is running SunOS 4.1xxx. I need to allow root login ONLY on the console. I've looked in /etc/default for the login file for the "console=/dev/console" parameter is, but there's no 'default" dir in /etc. Can someone help? Thanks (2 Replies)

Hello all, I've a problem with root login password in Solaris. After I installed a patch the root password became empty, so to login as root I don't have to type any password, just username: root. NAME

       sulogin - access single-user mode

SYNOPSIS

       sulogin

DESCRIPTION

       The  sulogin  utility  is  automatically invoked by init when the system is first started. It prompts the user to type the root password to
       enter system maintenance mode (single-user mode) or to type  EOF (typically <CTRL-D>) for normal startup (multi-user mode). The user should
       never directly invoke sulogin.

       The  sulogin utility can prompt the user to enter the root password on a variable number of serial console devices, in addition to the tra-
       ditional console device. See consadm(1M) and msglog(7D) for a description of how to configure a serial device to  display  the  single-user
       login prompt.

FILES

       /etc/default/sulogin    Default value can be set for the following flag:

			       PASSREQ	       Determines if login requires a password. Default is PASSREQ=YES.

       /etc/default/login      Default value can be set for the following flag:

			       SLEEPTIME       If  present,  sets  the number of seconds to wait before login failure is printed to the screen and
					       another login attempt is allowed. Default is 4 seconds. Minimum is 0 seconds. Maximum is 5 seconds.

					       Both su(1M) and login(1) are affected by the value of SLEEPTIME.
