Windows 2003 is not a true Domain server. It uses Active Directory (more or less LDAP). It can act as a domain server to XP, and be used by SAMBA (samba.org) as a domain server. *IF* it is setup correctly !! My advice is to setup SAMBA on the 'UNIX' machine and use the 2003 server to authenticate. See the SAMBA manuals.

Putty on Windows acts as a very decent SSH client. It is a good choice.
