Learning UNIX
Alright I am looking to further my knowledge and experiance with computers (Currently a PC technician but not much knowledge with other operating systems like unix/linux). What im trying to do now is get a basic understanding of unix and its commands, unix shells, the unix directory structure, and unix editors, such as VI or EMacs. What I would like to do is run a livedistro CD since I only have 1 computer and cant format everything to another OS. I HAVE searched the forums and keep getting confused on exactly what to download. If sombody could point me in the right direction, i would greatly apreciate it. I can burn the CD and all that, and probly find the basic commands and such on another website, but any information you are willing to spare is apreciated.

Helo !
If you want a LiveCD/LiveDVD you can try RoFreeSBIE. It is a FreeBSD 6.1 based LiveCD/LiveDVD. After you download it and burn it on a CD you should start reading the FreeBSD Handbook. I'm sure it will help. For vi, I'll recomend you this tutorial. |

Here...
if you really want learn stuff, get "UNIX Essentials and UNIX Core" DVD course, it covers Linux as well, and BTW, it comes with useful certifications. After this one, get Emi Nemeth's "UNIX Administrator's" handbook. All this FreeBSD stuff is terribly narrow and outdated. If you learn to find a better job concentrate on Linux, Solaris, AIX and OS X, that is where the jobs and money.

Well that DVD looks very good, I really wish I could get it ($100+ owch, but thats not a bad price I guess). What im trying to do is get a new job at a company, and they require some knowledge of Unix, but they are going to train but it would be nice to know the basics. Obviously that DVD is made for sombody in my position. Its not that I couldnt afford it (Dont know if i can right now lol), its that its kind of a risk incase I dont end up getting this job. Of course the training would always be helpfull in any job, I dunno, if i had more time and money, I probly would have already ordered it.

Rycon, I tried to send you a private message but it says you won't recieve them. Please send me a PM with your email address so I can contact you. I have some Unix training courses I haven't used for years and am wondering if we can work out a deal to get them to you cheap.
