What "ssh commands" are you using? My guess is that they are commands that can be run from any UNIX command line, and you just happen to be using SSH to execute them.

Get a manual on 'tar', and one on 'gzip' for info on the "tar.gz" file format. One way to do it is this:

tar cf - mydir/ | gzip > mydir.tgz

This will compress the "mydir" directory and store in a "tgz" file. To decompress,

gzip -dc mydir.tgz | tar xf -

could not send commands SSH session with Net::SSH::Expect

I'm new to perl. I have a input file with pipe delimited lines which have server_name, and file names as fields. The file names have wild card (*) in the input feed file. NAME

       gzforce - force a '.gz' extension on all gzip files

SYNOPSIS

       gzforce [ name ...  ]

DESCRIPTION

       gzforce	forces a .gz extension on all gzip files so that gzip will not compress them twice.  This can be useful for files with names trun-
       cated after a file transfer.  On systems with a 14 char limitation on file names, the original name is truncated to make room for  the  .gz
       suffix. For example, 12345678901234 is renamed to 12345678901.gz. A file name such as foo.tgz is left intact.
