I want to dual-boot Windows 98 and Redhat 7. My scheme for doing this is to partition into:

A FAT32 partition for windows
A Linux partition for root
A swap partition
A boot partition

My question is: At what point do I setup windows on the FAT partition? Would I do it from the command line once linux is set up, or during setup?

first you have to load Win 98 by giving it a partition and then load Linux after 98. and when loading linux you have to install lilo in the MBR.

if you think of creating and making the Paritions are messy and confuse. You may use partition magic from Powerquest. There is no online download for the utility but yoy may purchase it. The functions: it will automatically create for you swap space , linux Ext2 partition and even parition size of your choise depends on your hdd size. Good luck!

I was rather scared of having to buy something, but it looks like I have to if I want to dual-boot.

All major Linux variations come with a free solution to what you're trying to do. It may not be as easy as Partition Magic, but it can be done.

I successfully installed win98, and tried to install Redhat. After attempting multiple setups, I could not successfully install, but each time got this error:

followed by umounting messages, etc.

What can I do to prevent this? I have tried using fdisk to turn off the "dos compatibility flag" (if that even helps) to no avail.

Any ideas?
